Privacy Policy

Last updated October 7, 2026

Backtrekker ("we", "us") is a backcountry trip-planning web app at backtrekker.com. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

Information we collect

Account information. Your email address and, if you sign in with Google, the name and email address Google shares with us. If you sign up with email, your password is handled by our authentication provider and stored in hashed form; we never see it in plain text.

Profile information you choose to add, such as a bio, home location, and social media handles.

Trips and messages. The trip descriptions and messages you send to generate an itinerary, and the trips you save or share.

Content you upload, such as trail photos and GPX files.

Technical information. Our hosting provider records standard request data such as IP address, browser type, and pages requested. Your browser also stores some data locally on your device, such as recent searches and cached weather.

We do not access your device's location.

How we use information

To run the service: sign you in, generate and save itineraries, display trails and photos, send account emails (such as sign-up confirmation and password reset), prevent abuse, and improve the app. To keep the service fast, a request that starts a conversation and the plan generated for it may be saved and shown to other people who send the identical request, so avoid putting personal details in your first message. We do not sell your personal information, and we do not show advertising.

Public and shared content

Trips you choose to share, and photos or GPX tracks you upload to a trail, can be seen by other users. GPX tracks may be combined with other users' tracks to improve a trail's route. Once combined, an individual contribution may not be separable.

Service providers

We use these providers to operate Backtrekker, and they process data on our behalf:

  • Supabase — authentication, database, and file storage
  • Vercel — hosting
  • Anthropic — processes the trip descriptions and messages you send in order to generate itineraries
  • Mapbox — maps
  • Unsplash and Openverse — photos
  • Open-Meteo — weather data
  • OpenStreetMap services — place search and trail data
  • Resend — sending account emails
  • Google — sign-in, if you choose it

We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the safety and rights of our users.

Retention and deletion

We keep your information while your account is active. You can ask us to delete your account and associated personal information at any time. Content that has been combined into shared trail data may remain in aggregated form.

Security

We use reasonable measures to protect your information, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.

Children

Backtrekker is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information.

Changes and contact

We may update this policy and will change the date above when we do.
