Terms of Service

Last updated October 7, 2026

By using Backtrekker ("the service") at backtrekker.com you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

Backcountry travel is risky — use your own judgment

Itineraries, route lines, distances, elevation, weather, permit information, campsites, water sources, and other details are generated with the help of AI and third-party data. They may be wrong, incomplete, or out of date. Trails close, weather changes, and conditions on the ground differ from any map.

Backtrekker is a planning aid, not a navigation or safety system. Always confirm routes, permits, closures, and conditions with the land manager and official sources, carry proper navigation and emergency equipment, and make your own decisions about whether a trip is safe for you. You use the service and follow any itinerary entirely at your own risk.

Your account

You are responsible for your account and for keeping your login details secure. Provide accurate information and don't share your account with others.

Content you upload

You keep ownership of the photos, GPX files, and other content you upload. You give Backtrekker a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to store, display, process, and combine that content (including merging GPX tracks with other users' tracks) in order to operate and improve the service.

Only upload content you have the right to share, such as GPS recordings of your own hikes or photos you took. Don't upload content copied from other websites or apps, or anything that breaks the law or someone else's rights.

Acceptable use

Don't misuse the service. That includes scraping or bulk-downloading it, trying to break or overload it, bypassing sign-in or usage limits, uploading harmful or misleading data, or using it to harass others. We may suspend or remove accounts and content that violate these terms.

Third-party data

Some trail and map data comes from OpenStreetMap contributors and is available under the Open Database License. Photos are provided by Unsplash, Openverse, and users. Third-party content remains subject to its own terms.

No warranty and limit of liability

The service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Backtrekker and its owner are not liable for any injury, loss, damage, or expense arising from your use of the service or reliance on its content, including any trip you take.

Changes and contact

We may update the service or these terms, and will change the date above when the terms change. Continuing to use the service means you accept the updated terms.
